But a lot of it is also to bring you along on our journey, our touchdown to Mars, and of course, our surface mission as well. “We will learn something by looking at the performance of the vehicle in these videos. “This is the first time we’ve been able to actually capture an event like the landing of a spacecraft on Mars,” said JPL Director Michael Watkins. On 22 February, engineers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory unveiled the results. The rover’s landing spot is shown by a green circle. The Perseverance rover landed in Jezero Crater just past the edge of an ancient river delta (visible at left). The 1,025-kilogram (2,260-pound) rover touched down on the surface seven minutes later after a complex, precisely orchestrated set of procedures, all of which had to go off without a hitch. The rover, encapsulated in an aerodynamic shell and protected by a heat shield, plunged into the thin atmosphere of Mars on 18 February at a velocity of 19,000 kph (12,000 mph) after a seven-month voyage from Earth. Video captured by the Perseverance Mars rover during its thrilling, near-flawless descent to the surface of the red planet gave engineers on Earth – and the public – their first ever views of landing on another planet. Low-resolution images were stitched together to create a panorama of the Perseverance rover’s landing site. ![]()
